Award Winning Consultants Provide Addiction Recovery Expertise
Bridging the Gaps is fortunate to have a great team of consultants on board.  Their work in the fields of brain chemistry, nutritional therapy, the disease of addiction, and relapse prevention has helped to mold our treatment philosophy, ensuring that our clients are given a tailor-made set of tools to support long-term sobriety.

David Miller, Ph.D. is a certified addictionologist, critically acclaimed and best-selling author, professor of addiction studies, and an expert in relapse prevention.  In his 27-year tenure in the addictions field and recovery community, he has run the gamut – private practice, an intensive outpatient treatment program, a detoxification program, a family intervention practice, and a food addiction treatment program.  As a BTG consultant, he promotes an integrative approach to addiction treatment utilizing nutrition, acupuncture, intravenous and oral supplementation therapy, and other alternative treatments.

Dr. Miller specializes in intravenous amino acid therapy and has studied the relationship between brain chemistry and such disorders as addiction, attention deficit, and weight management.  He has also developed groundbreaking strategies to help chronic addiction relapsers increase their sobriety skills and has pioneered an approach to relapse prevention that complements methods that address the physiology of addiction.  He writes extensively on these topics in books he has co-authored: “Overload: Attention Deficit Disorder and the Addictive Brain,” “Staying Clean and Sober: Complementary and Natural Healing Strategies for Healing the Addicted Brain,” among others.

"Conventional [addictions] treatment does not have a good track record with respect to success rate.  For the most part, there is a severe problem with relapse.  They might get people abstinent for the short term, but most of those people go back to using.  They [traditional programs] are not treating the foundational aspects of the addiction.”

Merlene Miller is an author, educator, clinician, and certified addictionologist.  She brings to Bridging the Gaps over 25 years of experience in the addictions/substance abuse field.  Merelene works along with her husband, Dr. David Miller, in private treatment centers and private practice specializing in family interventions.  The Miller team is highly respected in the treatment community, best known for their work in relapse prevention.  Merlene has developed addiction studies curriculums for two universities, created educational materials for addiction treatment centers across the nation, and has worked as a training consultant for addiction professionals.  She is a member of the board of directors for the American College of Addictionology and Compulsive Disorders.

Merlene has authored and co-authored numerous books including “Staying Sober: A Guide to Relapse Prevention,” “Learning to Live Again: A Guide to Recovery from Chemical Dependence” and the award-winning “Staying Clean and Sober: Complementary and Natural Strategies for Healing the Addicted Brain."

“Bridging the Gaps treats the whole person.  Most treatment centers are very good at treating the psychosocial, the spiritual, and the behavioral aspects of addiction.  At Bridging The Gaps, we understand that the brain needs healing and offer a variety of strategies that directly address the problems of the brain!”

Julia Ross is a pioneer in the field of nutritional psychology and is best known for spearheading research which investigated the link between biochemistry, emotions, and addictions.  This led to the development of a new model of treatment that combines innovative nutritional therapy and holistic medical care with conventional counseling and education.  As a BTG consultant, Ross has provided intensive training for staff members on how to successfully treat mood problems and chemical dependency, and she offers guidance with regard to oral/amino acid therapy.

Ross has made hundreds of presentations, appeared as an expert on national radio and television programs, and has taught several courses at some of the nation’s top universities on the extraordinary benefits of nutrient therapy and biochemical rebalancing.  She has been honored by the state of California for her work with diabetes and addiction in California’s Native American tribal clinics, and is the Executive Director of The Recovery Systems Clinic.  Ross is also the best-selling author of “The Mood Cure,” which has sold over 150,000 copies, and has had her work featured in “Psychology Today,” “Alternative Medicine,” and “San Francisco Examiner Magazine,” among others.

“We can do psycho-therapy for years and the person is benefiting but never loses the craving for the substance.  When we started using nutritional therapy and adding it to the psychotherapy, 12 Step, and Family Program, we got something that worked.  Instead of a 90% relapse rate, we started seeing a 20% relapse rate.”
