Anthem BCBS makes health care simpler by offering different plans and levels of coverage through Medicare, Medicaid, employers, and current or retired federal employees.

The short answer is yes, but coverage plans and tiers may vary. Blue Cross Blue Shield does generally cover drug rehab.  However, the extent of the coverage depends on the patient and their insurance plan.

Anthem covers a variety of behavioral therapy and mental health treatments. It is also the parent company of BCBS, so the coverage options are similar.

Here are Anthem BCBS’ four coverage options:

  • Gold: You will pay higher monthly premiums, with lower deductibles and co-pays. Anthem pays for nearly 80% of medical costs.
  • Platinum: You will pay the highest monthly premiums with this plan. However, the platinum plan has the lowest deductibles. Anthem pays for nearly 90% of medical costs.

When selecting an addiction treatment program for yourself or a family member, it can be stressful figuring out how to pay for it. If you have Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) insurance, you’re probably wondering how much Anthem BCBS will cover for residential or intensive outpatient treatment.

To find out about your coverage and benefits, you can call the number on the back of your insurance card. A customer service representative can help you locate treatment facilities and therapists in the area, along with coverage and benefits details.

You can also create a profile on Anthem.com to view your benefits information. To view your information, click on “my plan” and then select “benefits.” If you need an estimate on the costs of different treatments, Anthem has an online tool to do that.

If you are a federal employee or retiree and are covered under the Federal Employees Health Benefits Program (FEHBP), you can receive benefits from Anthem BCBS. Here are 3 plans for federal employees or retirees:

  • Standard: With this plan, you can use in-network and out-of-network providers with a low deductible.
  • Basic: This plan covers preferred providers. There is no deductible, but there are co-pays.
  • FEP Blue Focus: This plan covers preferred providers, paired with a low deductible and lower co-pays.

If you have a plan with Medicare, Anthem BCBS offers medical, hospital, and prescription coverage in a singular plan for those who qualify.

Using Anthem Insurance for Rehab

If you decide to use your Anthem insurance to pay for rehab, you’ll want to consider the following:

  1. To obtain eligibility, you may need a referral or precertification for treatment coverage. Check with your insurance provider to see if this will apply to you.
  2. You may need a deductible to use behavioral health benefits for drug rehab.
  3. Your insurance provider may require co-payments. The amount of each co-payment will depend on which Anthem BCBS health plan you have.
  4. Anthem may only allow you to use their insurance coverage for a specific length of time.
  5. If you prefer to seek treatment in a facility out of state, Anthem may offer out-of-state insurance. If not, you can use a guest membership. This membership allows eligible individuals to join an affiliated HMO in another state if they are staying over 90 days.

For further questions about using Anthem BCBS for rehab, it’s best to call Anthem or your treatment facility directly.
